How to Care for Your Shapewear (and Make It Last Longer)

Your shapewear works hard for you, shaping, smoothing, lifting, and supporting you day after day. But just like any wardrobe essential, it deserves a little TLC to keep performing (and looking) its best.

If you’ve ever noticed your favorite shaper losing its elasticity or feeling less firm over time, don’t worry,  the secret to longer-lasting shapewear is in how you care for it. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your sculpting pieces in top condition.

1. Wash Gently (and Less Often)

Shapewear doesn’t need to be washed after every wear,  unless you’ve been sweating heavily. Washing too frequently can weaken the compression fibers and shorten its life.

When you do wash it:

  • Hand wash in cool or lukewarm water with a mild detergent.
  • Avoid bleach and fabric softeners, which can break down spandex.
  • If you must use a machine, put it in a mesh laundry bag and select the gentle or delicate cycle.

Pro tip: Add a small splash of white vinegar during rinsing to help remove body oils and odors naturally.

2. Air Dry Only

Never, and we mean never, put your shapewear in the dryer. The heat can ruin elasticity and compression instantly.

Instead:

  • Lay flat on a clean towel or hang dry in a shaded, airy space.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, as UV rays can weaken fibers and fade colors.

Patience pays off: air-drying helps your shapewear keep its original fit and firmness for much longer.

3. Rotate Between Pieces

If you wear shapewear often, consider owning two or three pieces and rotating them. This gives each piece a break to return to its natural shape before the next wear.

Think of it as letting your shapewear “recover” between workouts,  it’s made from performance-grade materials that benefit from rest!

4. Handle with Care

When putting on or removing your shapewear, avoid tugging or pulling hard on delicate seams or lace edges. Roll it up gently from the feet to the waist when dressing — especially with firm-control or full-body designs.

Also, avoid sharp nails or jewelry that can snag the material.

5. Store Smartly

Proper storage is just as important as washing.

  • Fold shapewear neatly instead of hanging it (to avoid stretching).
  • Keep it in a cool, dry drawer away from direct heat or moisture.
  • For long-term storage, use breathable fabric bags instead of plastic.

6. Know When to Replace

Even with the best care, shapewear isn’t forever. If you notice loose seams, reduced compression, or the fit isn’t as snug as before, it’s time to replace it.

On average, good-quality shapewear lasts 6–12 months with regular wear, longer if cared for properly.

Final Thoughts

Taking care of your shapewear doesn’t just extend its lifespan — it ensures that it continues to shape, smooth, and support you like the day you bought it.

Treat your shapewear with care, and it will keep you looking and feeling confident for months to come.
